“Dansala” for stray dogs organized with a view to reminding the people of their responsibility on their pets, was held successfully today with the participation of many new faces. The event started early in the morning at Peradeniya where the food was prepared. Reverent Missaka Kamalasiri thero also attended the site and did a Dhamma sermon. Hundreds of stray dogs roaming around Gohagoda (dumpsite), Maligawa premises, town area, hospital premises, Hantana, Peradeniya and Galaha areas were severed with food.
Stray dogs living in Kandy or any other city are not a result of normal environmental phenomenon. Their numbers have been drastically increasing not because they wanted but due to the irresponsible selfish and rude behaviors of citizens.
Vesak is the ideal time to think twice. We, Buddhists commemorate Birth, Enlightenment and Passing away of a great religious leader who was equally kind to animals as much as for humans. Being his followers is it morally right to make life hell for these helpless creatures.
Time has come to act more humanly and responsibly. Facilities are abundant to stop the dogs producing unwanted litter. Private veterinary clinics conduct sterilization surgeries at affordable prices while the national dog sterilization programme conducted by the government sterilizes the dogs free. Getting either of these services will prevent you from the sin of making life of a dog much miserable and putting an unnecessary burden on the government.
