The Government spends 200 million rupees every year from 2008 to control the dog population. Their goal is to eradicate rabies completely from Sri Lanka by 2016. We appreciate the steps taken to eradicate rabies by creating a national policy.

Some individuals who are aiming to sabotage this national programme complain that there’s no significant reduction of human deaths caused by rabies and dog bites from 2008 to 2010. As a Professional Association we have appointed a committee to investigate these claims and make proposals to get immediate results from the national programme.

Dr. Upul Sagarathilaka, who’s leading the committee pointed out that lack of knowledge about handling and raring of dogs and cats is the main reason for bites. 56 human deaths have been reported in 2009 due to neglecting dog & cat bites. The committee concluded that without educating people about rabies, eradicating it would be impossible.

After a discussion with Dr. Shantha Samarasinghe (Provincial Director of Health – Central Province) we decided to establish a proper model in Kundasale MOH Area to educate people about rabies and how to take care of their pets.

We hope to provide the methodology and results of this awareness programme to the Ministry of Health as soon as possible to achieve their goal of rabies eradication by 2016.

An initial discussion was held today with Dr. Chandra Jayantha (MOH Kundasale) and other Health Officials on the implementation of awareness programme. Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara conducted the discussion for our association.
