 අත්සන් දස ලක්ෂය සම්පූර්ණ වීමෙන් අනතුරුව එය ලබන මාසයේදී ජණාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතා වෙත පිලිගැන්වීමට ද අපේක්ෂිතයි.

A dog with severe damage to the lower jaw was brought to the Ratnapura Clinic. The damage was occurred by an explosive used to kill wild boars in Gileemale area.

A 2-hour surgery was carried out by Dr. Ranil Kumaratissa to fix the damages. Dr. Ranil’s effort saved the life of this innocent dog and we congratulate him for his excellent skills.

A Dog Sterilization, Treatment and Vaccination program was conducted at the following locations on November 13 & 14:

• Earl’s Regency Hotel, Thennekumbura
• New Town Kundasale
• Police Training Center, Kundasale
• Balagolla International Stadium

This program was conducted to reduce the number of roaming dogs in these areas when the World Cup Cricket series is commencing.

108 dogs were sterilized and vaccinated. 17 dogs were treated for bad skin conditions.

Kundasale MOH Office and Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha organized the program.

But the director of Public Health Services Dr. P. A. L. Harischandra accused that the shortage was a plot by a certain groups to embarrass the Ministry of Health and the government.

However, several districts have stopped their rabies vaccination programmes due to the shortage (Batticaloa, Trincomalee). If any human deaths occur due to this shortage of vaccines, the Director of Public Health Services should take the full responsibility and must answer to the public.

SHORTAGE OF RABIES VACCINES: VETERINARIANS; NO, SAYS MINISTRY

October 05, 2010: There is an island wide shortage of rabies vaccines, says the Joint Association of Veterinarians to Eradicate Rabies.

The Association’s advisor, Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara said that the rabies death toll, reduced last year as a result of a successful rabies eradication campaign, could increase yet again this year.

Dr. Nanayakkara went on to say that there were only around 4,000 vaccinations left.

However, when Newsfirst contacted Dr. P. A. L. Harischandra, Director of Public Health and Veterinary Services at the Ministry of Health, he said that there was no such shortage and claimed that the charge of a shortage was a plot by a certain group to embarrass the Ministry of Health and the government.

He went on to say that since the beginning of this year, 800,000 rabies vaccinations were distributed island wide out of which over 500,000 vaccinations had already been administered.

S. Krisandani, a little flower from Echchalanpaththu, Trincomalee passed away on June 2010 at the age of 7 because of Rabies. If we don’t act responsibly this kind of a sad incident can happen anywhere.

Let’s not postpone our responsibilities and get together to eradicate rabies from our country immediately.

Collecting One Million Signatures to request banning Animal Sacrifice legally in Sri Lanka was initiated on 4th October, 2010 at New Town Hall, Colombo. This will be handed over to the Hon. President, Mahinda Rajapaksa in December.

56 human deaths were reported in 2009 due to Rabies. But only 28 rabies deaths were reported this year. Proper Dog Vaccination programme, Methodical Dog Population Control Sterilization Programme and Scientific Treatment Schedules in Hospitals after dog bites are the reasons for this significant reduction of deaths. Proper planning and Implementation by the Health Sector officials and the support of Veterinary Surgeons are behind this success.

Unfortunately, Animal Rabies Vaccine stocks have been depleted due to the irresponsible management of the Public Veterinary Service in the Ministry of Health.

This depletion has occurred before in 2008 and 2009. We constantly made the responsible authorities aware of the situation and told them not to let this happen in the future.

The Public Veterinary Service of the Ministry of Health should be responsible for the human deaths from rabies in the next couple of months, if the death-toll increases.

The alliance will be collecting 1 million signatures to request legally banning Animal Sacrifice in Sri Lanka.

The event is to take place at the New Town Hall in Colombo on 4th October, 2010 at 9am.

We congratulate the forming of the alliance and urge all animal lovers to join to stop animal sacrifice in Sri Lanka.

Public Awareness is the most important part in the Eradication of Rabies and Several programmes were organized in Trincomalee and Batticaloa Districts on 28th September, 2010 for the World Rabies Day.
