Sterilized 43 dogs (38 females & 5 males) and vaccinated 87 dogs at Open Prison Camp – Pallekale on 24th July, 2010 for the third consecutive year. Dr. Udaya Wijewardhana conducted the programme. Kundasale MOH Dr. Chandra Jayantha visited for observation.
Quarterly Review Meeting of the Dog Sterilization Programme was held on 22nd July, 2010 at the Kurunegala District Rabies Unit Office.
Mr. W. A. A. Gunathilake was a driver attached to the Kurunegala District Rabies Unit. He passed away last month due to a renal failure at the age of 41. Sabaragamuwa Provincial Health Minister, Mr. Bhanu Munipriya visited to observe the ongoing programme at Mudduwa playground at Ratnapura Municipal Area with other health officials on 21st July, 2010. Dr. Kapila Kannangara (Provincial Director of Health), Dr. Panditharathna (Regional Epidemiologist) were also present. Dr. Ranil Kumarathissa organized the programme.

We have had many reports about unqualified individuals carrying out treatments and surgeries for animals illegally in Sri Lanka. This practice has caused many complications and deaths in animals. As another step of establishing a proper Rabies Awareness Programme, we organized a seminar for Local Government Officials (Grama Niladhari and Samurdhi Officials) who belong to Kundasale Divisional Secretariat Office on 16th July, 2010. Assistant Divisional Secretary Mrs. W. S. P. Wickramaarachchi presided at the meeting. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara.
There are a number of difficulties in the implementation of National Dog Sterilization Programme which is becoming a big issue day by day. Incomplete tender procedures, very low price for surgeries, unending discussions about minimum sterility and quality of surgeries, unwanted competition among veterinary groups, unnecessary involvement of a few animal welfare organizations are driving [...]
A Sterilization and Treatment Camp, the first step of making Kundasale MOH a rabies-free zone was held on 12th July, 2010 at Aluthwaththa, Kundasale. 61 dogs were sterilized.
